Experiences and Trails
SLOVENIA SHORT BREAK:
Exploring Kobarid on foot
Cozy Kobarid is the most iconic town in the entire Soča Valley. White houses and terracotta roofs give it an almost Mediterranean feel with alleys and courtyards filled with pots of flowers in summer. All around tower 2000m-high Alpine peaks from which marvelous views range from the Dolomites to the Alps to the Adriatic. These heights were the scene of the greatest mountain battles in history, the evidence of which is collected in the town’s not-to-be-missed museum. In addition to the considerable historical interest, there are many natural and cultural attractions that the Kobarid area offers the visitor. The Soča, the most beautiful river in Europe, frames magnificent hikes leading to waterfalls, alpine valleys, and ancient pastures where the art of dairy farming still follows ancient traditions. At the end of the day, the trattorias and small restaurants still know how to give the flavors of yesteryear including the štruklji that all Kobarid grandmothers know how to prepare for dessert.
WALK OF PEACE:
Kobarid and the mountain battles of the Isonzo Front
Between 1915 and 1917, some of the greatest mountain battles in human history were fought in the Upper Soča Valley. The focal point of these events was the town of Kobarid, which has gone down in history books all over the world. On the surrounding plateaus, well-preserved remains from the Great War (trenches, caves, small churches and chapels, memorials, military cemeteries) represent an internationally-significant historical and cultural heritage, managed today by the Walk of Peace foundation.

WALK OF PEACE: historical routes in the Gorizia region
Nicknamed the ‘Habsburg Nice’ due to its architectural treasures and historical atmosphere, at the end of the 19th century Gorizia was a popular holiday destination for the aristocracy. However, in 1915 everything changed. The city suddenly found itself at the centre of the Isonzo Front, and the surrounding mountains of Sabotin, Calvario and San Michele became the sites of bloody battles. One hundred years later, the paths that criss-cross these heights are still a tragic testimony to suffering, heroic deeds and resistance. Nevertheless, they also stand for peace, hope and the coexistence of peoples across borders. The paths and monuments are managed today by the Walk of Peace foundation.
